Weekly Semiconductor Industry News Brief

① TSMC Targets New Battlefield of 12-inch SiC, Deploying Key Thermal Materials for AI EraDriven by AI and HPC, thermal management has become a critical bottleneck for chip design and manufacturing. As advanced packaging such as 3D stacking and 2.5D integration boosts chip density and power consumption, traditional ceramic substrates can hardly meet heat flux requirements. Leading foundry TSMC responds by fully adopting 12-inch single-crystal silicon carbide substrates and gradually phasing out GaN businesses.

② Samsung HBM3E Memory Passes NVIDIA CertificationSouth Korean industry insiders disclosed that Samsung’s 12-layer fifth-generation HBM3E has passed NVIDIA’s quality certification. Shipments of high-end memory chips will start soon, laying groundwork for competition in the upcoming HBM4 market.

③ Lizhong Group: Silicon-Aluminum Alloy and AlSiC New Materials Achieve Mass ProductionOn September 19, Lizhong Group informed investors that self-developed silicon-aluminum alloy and aluminum silicon carbide materials have entered mass production for key semiconductor equipment components including bases, supports and electrostatic chucks. Silicon-aluminum alloy fits ultra-high precision high-speed parts, while AlSiC serves high-strength components thanks to outstanding rigidity and wear resistance.

④ Horizon Robotics to Launch New Cabin-Driving Integrated Chip in 2026According to IT Home on September 19, domestic autonomous driving provider Horizon Robotics plans to release a new cabin-driving integrated chip and achieve mass production in 2026. Sources indicate it may be the most complex chip the firm has ever designed, with its VP and chief architect Su Jing’s ADAS team participating in computing power definition.

⑤ NVIDIA Invests USD 500 Million in UK Autonomous Driving Startup WayveNVIDIA announced a USD 500 million strategic investment in British self-driving startup Wayve, representing deeper bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence.

⑥ MediaTek Unveils Dimensity 9500 Flagship Chip, Aiming for 40% Market ShareOn September 22, 2025, MediaTek launched its latest 5G flagship chip Dimensity 9500 featured with powerful performance and excellent thermal efficiency, seeking to expand presence in the high-end smartphone market.

⑦ Dual Technologies Drive Breakthrough: SiC Optical Waveguides Reach Turning Point for Cost Reduction8-inch SiC optical substrates account for 86% of total waveguide cost, making SiC solutions around six times pricier than glass. 12-inch substrates face even higher costs and application barriers. High costs stem from low crystal growth yield, difficulties in large-size crystal manufacturing and high processing loss.

⑧ ROHM to Start Production of 5th-Gen SiC MOSFET on 8-inch Lines This YearAs reported by Nikkei Crosstech on September 19, Kazuhide Ino, Managing Director of ROHM’s Power Device Division, stated that the company will commercialize its 5th-generation SiC MOSFET within 2025, manufactured on 8-inch SiC substrates starting from this generation.

⑨ Ningbo Aura Semiconductor Signs Multi-Phase Power Technology Deal with onsemiOn September 23, Ningbo Aura Semiconductor announced a Vcore multi-phase power technology licensing agreement with onsemi, covering technology and relevant IP authorization.

⑩ Mitsubishi Electric’s 8-inch SiC Factory Expected to Complete Construction This MonthIn an interview with Nikkei Crosstech on September 19, Masayoshi Takemi, Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Electric Semiconductors, said its 8-inch SiC plant in Kumamoto, Japan will finish construction in September 2025. Trial production using 8-inch SiC substrates will start in November, with mass production scheduled for 2027.
